At Millcroft, our strength has always come from our versatility. For over half a century, we’ve combined the specialist expertise of a scaffolding contractor with the technical precision of a principal contractor to deliver projects across a diverse range of sectors. From landmark heritage buildings across London to major infrastructure upgrades and complex industrial facilities, our scaffolding and construction expertise adapts to meet the unique challenges of each sector.
Industrial and manufacturing: Decades of partnership
Industrial environments require absolute precision. Work is often carried out in live, high-risk settings where safety and continuity go hand in hand. This is where our construction division truly comes into its own.
For more than 35 years, we’ve supported industry giant Tate & Lyle at its Thames Refinery, delivering specialist works including structural repairs to the Raw Sugar Jetty, where imported sugar arrives by sea. Our team has received bespoke training for working above water, with awareness of tidal movements on one of the Thames’ busiest stretches.
Industrial plants never sleep, and our teams are accustomed to working within live production environments where meticulous planning, strict controls and clear communication are essential. Our ability to work in these environments has made us a long-standing, trusted partner to major industrial companies such as Procter & Gamble, Johnson Matthey, and Tate & Lyle.
Rail & transport infrastructure: Keeping the UK moving
The rail sector has been central to Millcroft’s identity for decades, but working in this sector demands an exceptional level of discipline, coordination and technical ability. It’s an environment where even the slightest misjudgement can have serious consequences. Our clients rely on us to deliver works that are robust, compliant and safely managed from start to finish.
Our current portfolio includes significant works across HS2's central London route, providing bespoke scaffolding solutions for ventilation shafts, head houses, bridges, and tunnelling works through an ongoing contract with Skanska Costain STRABAG JV.
Millcroft’s decades-long relationship with Transport for London (TfL) is something we’re particularly proud of. One of our recent standout projects was the major scaffolding package at Whitechapel for TfL’s maintenance programme for its retail and residential properties. Our package included scaffolding to provide safe access for works to the façades, windows, and roofs, and the installation of a 150-metre protective screen between properties and the live London Underground line. The project faced challenges of limited space and navigating a bustling street market, but our close collaboration and meticulous planning ensured the programme stayed on track.
Heritage and conservation: Preserving Britain’s iconic buildings
Working on some of the country’s most treasured buildings requires more than just technical skill. It demands sensitivity, specialist knowledge and absolute protection.
Our scaffolding teams have supported conservation efforts at some of the UK’s most prestigious addresses, including major justice centre buildings like The Supreme Court, as well as breathtaking interiors, such as the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. At Space House in Holborn, London, our access and safety scaffolding solutions enabled major façade and refurbishment works, rising to the challenge of designing a scaffold for the full height of the iconic Grade-II listed building, without tying into its façade.
Each project illustrates our expert approach to heritage work when standard solutions are not always possible. Through the skills of our in-house design team, we can design bespoke systems that protect delicate façades, accommodate listed building restrictions and provide safe access for specialist conservation teams.
Commercial, residential and education: Building for the future
Our breadth of experience extends across so many sectors, including mixed-use developments, residential and education.
One of our current projects is Alkerden Academy in Ebbsfleet Garden City, the largest educational development ever delivered in Kent. Our scaffolding division designed and installed bespoke scaffolding solutions for the final construction phases and internal fit out of the new buildings. Using 3D modelling and structural analysis software, we created a safe, efficient scaffold design that supported heavy loads without the need for double standards in the taller sections or extra bracing to keep it stable.
The best of both divisions
One of the most recent examples of our divisional collaboration is the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London. We were appointed to deliver a turnkey refurbishment of four external fire escape staircases. With the hotel fully operational throughout, our scaffolding and construction teams worked hand in hand to carefully sequence the project and minimise disruption to guests and staff. This tight integration between disciplines is where Millcroft’s combined offering really shines.
A partner for every environment
What ties all these projects together is how we deliver them. We bring the reliability of a long-established family business, the technical depth of a multi-disciplinary contractor, and the flexibility of a team used to working in demanding, high-pressure, live environments.
It’s this combination of expertise, adaptability and commitment to safety that continues to earn the trust of clients across the UK. Whatever the sector, whatever the challenge, we have the capability, the people and the experience to deliver.
